The body that cannot be nourished. The body that cannot nourish.
Milk, traditionally a symbol of nourishment, care, and motherhood, became a site of contradiction within my body. Living with illness, my body produced milk even though I could not sustain life; yet when I ingested it, my body rejected it violently. The performance exposed a paradox between the desire to nourish and the body's inability to sustain — a lived contradiction between biological function and bodily reality.
The work staged this paradox as a durational act, making visible the body's simultaneous capacity to produce care and to refuse it. What the body offered, it could not receive. What it expelled, it could not accept. The performance held both of these truths at once — not as metaphor, but as fact.
The material of milk — its warmth, its whiteness, its association with beginnings — became the site of rupture. By foregrounding the body's internal contradiction rather than concealing it, the work positioned illness not as an obstacle to performance but as its content.
This work produced a foundational insight for PLRM: that contradiction is a lived condition. The body in this performance held mutually incompatible truths without resolution, demonstrating that meaning and knowledge emerge from inhabiting tension rather than resolving it. The body does not need to be coherent to be legible. This insight — that contradiction is not a failure but a site of epistemological depth — would shape every subsequent work in the practice.
