Pain that cannot be shared is not understood. Distance is its failure.
"I run on guilt. Guilty: because I don't take care of my health. Frantic: because I haven't realized all of my goals and find myself getting further and further away from being able to accept love in my life. In my frenzy to be alive and heard, I'm afraid I may not really be experiencing my life."
In Guilt, Pain, Chained, I confronted the risk inherent in endurance-based performance: the possibility that pain becomes spectacle rather than meaning. Although the actions were physically demanding, the audience remained distant, unable to access the internal state that shaped the performance. The work revealed a fundamental tension in durational practice — that the intensity of a performer's internal experience does not automatically transmit. Suffering witnessed from the outside can become aesthetic rather than relational.
The chains, the physical exhaustion, the visible marks on the body — all of these produced an image of pain without generating understanding. The audience saw the performance but could not feel its necessity. This gap between what the body was doing and what the audience received became the work's most important finding.
This failure was crucial for the evolution of PLRM. It revealed that pain alone does not produce understanding, and that endurance without context or relationality cannot carry epistemic force. This recognition redirected my practice away from the aesthetics of harm and toward performances that prioritised intimacy, care, and shared meaning. The failure of Guilt, Pain, Chained made the Cleaning Performance necessary — and possible.
